Moscow rejects U.S. claim that Armenia seeks to distance from Russia

PanARMENIAN.Net - Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has declared that the West is promoting a “destructive” agenda in the South Caucasus, the goal of which is to fragment the region and destroy historical ties with Moscow

Zakharova made the remarks when asked by RIA Novosti to comment on a statement from U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James O'Brien who said the United States is assisting Armenia’s political leadership in its efforts to “break with Russia.”

"(O'Brien. - Ed.) merely signed up to what we regularly talk about and warn our partners about, including those in Yerevan, namely: the West is promoting a destructive agenda in the South Caucasus, the main goal of which is the same - to fragment the region, destroying Russia's historical ties with its traditional allies and neighbors," Zakharova said.

According to Zakharova, U.S. claims that Armenia wants to break away from Russia are “unfounded”. She expressed confidence that the ties between the two countries will withstand all the tests of strength that the West tirelessly subjects them to.

“Throughout history, we have repeatedly lent a shoulder to the brotherly Armenian people, and we intend to do so in the future,” the Foreign Ministry representative concluded.

Armenia and Russia formally established a military alliance in 1996 but Russia failed to intervene when Azerbaijan launched a massive war on Nagorno-Karabakh, attacked Armenia and captured territories, starved the entire population of Nagorno-Karabakh and drove them out of their homeland, all between 2020 and 2023.
