Girls over 16 can decide on abortion independently

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian government has approved a decision refining the conditions for pregnancy termination. Under the new regulations, medication-based abortions for pregnancies up to eight weeks can now be performed outside hospital settings.

A legislative amendment replaces the term "minor" with "under 16," meaning parental or legal guardian consent will only be required for those under 16, reports Auroranews.am.

Additionally, a written request is now required for abortions performed for social reasons.

The new decision solidifies the rights of girls aged 16 and older, allowing them to make independent decisions regarding abortion. If a girl under 16 does not have a parent or legal guardian present, a designated contact person authorized by the guardian may be involved, taking into account the child's opinion.

Certain consent requirements for medical intervention have been eliminated, streamlining unnecessary procedures.

Furthermore, the term "non-developing pregnancy" has been added to the medical indications for abortion, aligning with the definition of "stillbirth." Previously, the lack of this term could lead to misinterpretation.

It has also been proposed that women's abortion requests be uploaded to the electronic healthcare system to ensure a clearer and more regulated process.
