Genocide remembrance event banned in Istanbul![]() April 22, 2026 - 15:13 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Authorities in Istanbul have once again denied permission to hold an event commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide on April 24. The “April 24 Commemoration Platform” applied to the governor’s office for permission to hold a gathering on April 24 at 19:00 in Kadıköy, in front of the Süreyya Opera House, but the request was rejected, Armenpress reported, citing Agos. In a statement, the platform noted that similar applications have been consistently rejected in recent years, whereas before the pandemic such commemorative events were regularly held in various cities, particularly in Istanbul. The organizers stated that holding such events is a fundamental democratic right and called for the decision to be reconsidered. They also emphasized that the gatherings aim to pay tribute to the victims of 1915, as well as to promote public memory and encourage confronting the past. The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, have arrived in Washington. The CSTO budget for the current year requires adjustments due to the refusal of Yerevan to pay their share of contributions. Six total incidents have burned 19 old-growth trees. Friday night 8 trees were torched along the beautiful main entrance. The EU does not intend to conduct military exercises with Armenia, Lead Spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano says. Partner news |
