Russian envoy to Armenia recalled for consultations

PanARMENIAN.Net - Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin has been summoned to Moscow for consultations. The announcement was made by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin has been recalled for consultations in connection with steps taken by the Armenian leadership toward closer relations with the European Union that are harming cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union,” the ministry said in a statement.

On May 28, the leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union member states adopted a declaration urging Armenia to hold a nationwide referendum as soon as possible on whether to join the European Union or remain within the EAEU.

According to the joint statement published on the Kremlin’s website, representatives of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia are expected to prepare, by December 2026, a report assessing the possible consequences for Armenia if its participation in the EAEU is suspended.

The document emphasizes that such measures are being considered due to perceived risks to the economic security of EAEU member states stemming from Yerevan’s plans regarding accession to the European Union.
