Rubio says Moscow opposes stronger U.S.-Armenia ties

PanARMENIAN.Net - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during congressional hearings that Moscow is dissatisfied with the deepening cooperation between the United States and Armenia.

“I think there are signs that they would like to see the current leader of Armenia defeated in the elections, given the development of relations with the United States,” he said, according to Radar Armenia.

Rubio also stressed that the United States is not interfering in Armenia’s sovereignty or its relations with other countries in any way. Rather, Washington is interested in developing a relationship with Armenia that is based not only on peace, but also on mutually beneficial cooperation.

“We simply want our relationship to be built on more than peace alone. Peace is important, but it is only the beginning; it opens up economic opportunities,” he said.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a number of documents at Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan. A framework agreement on strategic cooperation regarding the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” project between Armenia and the United States was initialed, and the Charter on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Armenia and the United States was also signed.
