Masis Mailyan: Distorted format of negotiations impeding Karabakh conflict resolution

PanARMENIAN.Net -
There are a number of reasons preventing the settlement of the Karabakh conflict, constantly delaying the process, Masis Mailyan , chairman of NKR Public Council on Foreign Policy and Security told PanARMENIAN.Net

According to him, a methodology of conflict resolution, the approach used by the international community and the OSCE Minsk Group is the main reason for that. "Their approaches do not reflect the reality, they are aimed not to a secure future, but bring us to the explosive past, otherwise, attempts are made to restore the status quo of 1988," Mailyan said. "To make a breakthrough in Karabakh conflict settlement the tactics of negotiations needs to be changed," he said.

Karabakh should be returned to the talks over conflict settlement and a full format of the negotiations should be restored,” Mailyan said, adding that distorted format of negotiations is impeding Karabakh conflict resolution.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
