Caucasian countries need EU support to strengthen democracy

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Caucasian countries are incapable to implement reforms on their own, according to Mr. Dennis Sammut, executive director of LINKS.

“Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan should cover a long way to strengthen and develop democracy. These countries need European Union's support,” Mr. Sammut said during the 73rd Rose Roth NATO PA seminar in Yerevan.

As to political processes in Azerbaijan, he said the opposition there is still weak and uncoordinated, what considerably affects the political situation.

Dwelling on the Karabakh conflict resolution, Mr. Sammut emphasized that contacts between civilians of Armenia and Azerbaijan are important.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
