Earthquake- destroyed city of Spitak recovering at steady rate

PanARMENIAN.Net - After the earthquake, the city of Spitak is being reconstructed in accordance with presidential program; 220 apartments were built by Glendale Hills construction company, the Deputy Mayor of Spitak Anahit Dyulajyan stated.

“On November 6, 165 apartments were put into possession of new owners, with the remaining 55 to be ready in near future,” she informed.

In a conversation with PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, Ms. Dyulajyan briefed her about reconstructed facilities in Spitak. “The majority of the apartment houses and schools buildings in Spitak have been reconstructed, unemployment remaining the main issue,” the Deputy Mayor said.

On December 7, 1988, at 11:41 a.m. local time a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook northwestern Armenia and was followed four minutes later by a magnitude 5.8 aftershock.

The earthquakeleveled the cities of Spitak and Gyumri and left 25 000 people dead, 100000 wounded and 500000 homeless.
