ANC Coordinator: ANC supporters make majority of Facebook users in ArmeniaFebruary 11, 2011 - 16:42 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Coordinator of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) Levon Zurabyan said that monitoring of Facebook shows that ANC supporters make majority of this social network users in Armenia. “It means that, first, ANC enjoys great support among Armenia’s population. Second, ANC is basically supported by educated people, who are familiar with internet and social networks technologies,” Zurabyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. He added that “social networks provide with a great opportunity for overcoming the information blockade imposed by the authorities, specifically, through controlling the entire television.” Zurabyan stated that the level of social networks influence is defined by the number of Internet users in the country, for examples, in Tunisia it makes around 35%, in Egypt – 25%, while in Armenia it was around 10% recently. “This figure is not serious for having an impact on social and political events. If it exceeds the level of 25-30%, it will become a serious factor,” said Zurabyan. According to him, “the low number of Internet users in the country is explained by the authorities’ policy, due to which there are incredibly high and unjustified prices for Internet, what artificially hampers growth in the number of Internet users.” At the same time, Zurabyan added that this index grew in Armenia over the past months due to mobile network users.
