AZERBAIJAN PROPOSES NATO TO STATION MILITARY BASES OF THE ALLIANCE IN THE CAUCASUS

PanARMENIAN.Net - YEREVAN, March 24. /Mediamax/. Azerbaijan has proposed NATO to station military bases of the North Atlantic alliance in the Caucasus.

As Prime News reports, Azeri Defense Minister Safar Abiyev said at the meeting with the deputy commander for U.S. European Command, General Carlton Fulford, that the stationing of NATO's bases in the South Caucasus would be one of the main factors of consolidation of peace in this region.

General Fulford welcomed the development and strengthening of ties between the Armed Forces of Turkey and Azerbaijan. Any relations with this country, representing one of the most powerful forces of NATO, would be helpful for Azerbaijan, he said.

NATO Secretary General Lord George Robertson stated this January, before his visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan, that "his visit isn't at all aimed at supporting the idea of the Southern Caucasian states' possible membership in NATO". Lord Robertson said none of the Southern Caucasian states has applied for NATO membership and "such statements are of academic, theoretical character at present". --0--
