Expert: nuclear energy of political and strategic importance for ArmeniaApril 26, 2011 - 18:05 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Deputy Director of Noravank foundation Sevak Sarukhanyan said that nuclear energy is of economic, technical, political and strategic importance for Armenia. “The new Armenian NPP is necessitated by the military and political situation in the region, as well as Armenia’s strategic location,” Sarukhanyan said at a discussion in Yerevan, titled “Nuclear Energy: Risks and Outlooks.” The expert noted that the low price for Russian gas supplied to Armenia is conditioned by political, but not economic reasons. Sarukhanyan recalled the subversive acts at Armenia-bound gas pipeline on Georgia’s territory during the Karabakh conflict. According to the expert, the acts were related to Azerbaijan’s confidence in the Armenian energy system’s complete dependence on imported gas. Sarukhanyan added that the Georgian section of the gas pipeline is in a poor condition, thus, resumption of natural gas supply may take up to 60 days in case of subversive acts. It was noted during the discussion that Abovyan gas storage will allow supplying Armenia with natural gas for maximum 14 days.
