International community will ostracize Baku in case of war renewal - expert

PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijan’s attempts to renew the war in Nagorno Karabakh won’t be supported by the international community, according to CIS States Institute’s Yerevan subsidiary director.

As Alexander Markarov told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, “any attempt at armed conflict will end in international community’s ostracizing Azerbaijan.”

As the expert noted, unacceptability of Karabakh settlement by use of force was repeatedly stressed in recent statements of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, as well as Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s interview on 2008 South Ossetia conflict.

At June 24 meeting in Kazan, the Presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia failed to sign an agreement on basic principles of Karabakh conflict settlement. As Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian noted later, despite the OSCE MG co-chairs’ efforts, Azerbaijan was not ready to accept the final version of basic principles, presenting ten new amendments at the last moment.

On July 8, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov handed over a personal message and proposals of RF President Dmitry Medvedev to Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev, who later submitted their responses for proposals advanced.

The Presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries - Barack Obama (U.S.), Nicolas Sarkozy (France) and Dmitry Medvedev (Russia) - adopted a traditional statement on the Karabakh conflict settlement at the G8 summit in the French resort of Deauville. In addition to making declarative appeals and statements, the three Presidents firmly called on the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders “to demonstrate political will and finalize...the basic principles (of a peace agreement) during the forthcoming summit in June.”
