IRANIAN PRESIDENT OFFICIAL VISIT TO ARMENIA UNDER PREPARATION
One of the goals of the past visit of Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi to Armenia was arrangement of the visit of president of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Khatami to Yerevan. As the head of the Iranian foreign ministry stated at a final press conference, the terms of the visit are not determined yet and depend on the condition of a number of joint projects, specifically, the building of a hydroelectric power plant on Arax border river, laying the Kajaran tunnel and Iran-Armenia gas pipeline. In his words, at present there are many options for gas supply from Iran to Armenia and "the more expedient one for both countries will be implemented." Concerning the foreign policy priorities of Teheran, K. Kharrazi said, "peace and security in the Caucasian region are an indispensable part of the Iranian national interests." He again emphasized problems in that important region should be solved exclusively via efforts of the peoples residing here. In his words, Teheran comes for formation of a system of regional security and considers 3+3 formula expedient, i.e. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia +Russia, Iran, Turkey. As of prospects of creation of such a system under the conditions when Turkey is a NATO member, and Georgia and Azerbaijan are already knocking at the Alliance door, the Iranian minister pointed out, "We consider the degree of ripeness of the Caucasian peoples to be sufficient for forming such security system themselves."
