SKYJACKING ATTEMPT IN AZERBAIJAN TO VISIT EX-PRESIDENT ELCHIBEY IN TURKEY

PanARMENIAN.Net - 19.08.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. An attempt to hijack a plane, flying from Nakhijevan to Baku with 118 passengers on board, was realized in Azerbaijan on Friday.

One of the passengers, threatening with a grenade, demanded to turn the airplane to Ankara, declaring that he wants to visit ex-president Abulfaz Elchibey, who is undergoing medical treatment in Turkey at present, told the journalists the director of Baku airport, Nazim Mekhtiyev. Besides, the hijacker demanded postponing the day of parliamentary elections from November 5 till December. According to the director of the airport, the terrorist was rendered harmless by the crew and the passengers. -0-
