Canonical to make Ubuntu for smartphones, tablets

PanARMENIAN.Net - Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical Ltd. (the company behind Ubuntu) announces they want to take their famous OS underpinned by Linux even further and develop a mobile operating system for smartphones and tablets. The first devices for developers will be launched in the second half of 2012.

The famous Ubuntu will be available for smartphones and tablets soon, said the Canonical founder and CEO. For the moment no product running the mobile version of Ubuntu operating system was revealed, but the Canonical CEO announced that by 2014 Ubuntu will be available both for smarrtphones and tablets. Ubuntu was previously ported on mobile terminals, but none of the attempts became popular among the handsets users.

Although there a lot of mobile operating systems currently on the market, only few of them manage to withstand the heavy competition, and WebOS and MeeGo are the perfect examples. Bada OS is also a good example of mediocre operating system, even though Samsung brags about selling a lot of smartphones powered by Bada.

Canonical, the company known for their open-source operating system, announced that after finalizing the latest PC version of Ubuntu, their efforts and resources will be focused to extend their platform on the handsets market, too. Thus, soon we might withstand Ubuntu Linux distribution for tablets, Smart TV devices and smartphones.

As they prepare to launch a mobile version of Ubuntu, Canonical are currently negotiating with many of the mobile chipset manufactures, especially ARM, an important company that supplies processors for tablets and various smartphone models, Geek Sailor reported.
