PEOPLE IN KRASNODAR REGION OF RUSSIA DEMAND HOLDING A REFERENDUM TO "ASCERTAIN THE RESIDENCE EXPEDIENCY" OF THE PEOPLE OF "CAUCASIAN-ASIAN" NATIONALITIES RESIDING IN THE REGION

PanARMENIAN.Net - 26.07.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. On July 22 the meeting of the representatives of Taman and other subdivisions of the Kuban Cossack troops with the members of "Otechestvo" movement, controlled by governor N. Kondratenko, took place in Krimsk, Krasnodar region.

As was reported to MEDIAMAX in the editorial office of the local Armenian "Yerkramas" paper, a resolution of the Krimsk Cossacks was accepted, which demanded holding a referendum to find out the opinion of the inhabitants of Krimsk and Abinsk territories concerning the residence expediency of Meskhetin Turks, Krimsk Tatars and people of other "Caucasian-Asian" origin residing in the region. A Coordinating Council of the union of the Russians of the Kuban western part was set up, which first of all will be occupied with the collection of signatures for the referendum.

On July 21 the Armenians, living in the Krasnodar district of Russia addressed a letter to the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, which read: "Many of us, not by hearsay, know about inter-ethnic and inter-religious conflicts, and today we, the heads of the Armenian communities of Tuapsinski and Apsheronski districts of Krasnodar region are appealing to you as the President of Russia and the guarantor of its Constitution. Unfortunately, the leaders of Krasnodar region do not pay much attention to the specific geopolitical position of the region, and speaking in press or by TV they create precedents for opposing the nations living in Kuban to one another. We feel greatly concerned about all this".

During the recent months the governor of Krasnodar region Nikolay Kondratenko, as well as his deputies, have repeatedly addressed accusations to the Armenians residing in the region, charging them with separatism attempts. Collisions between the Cossacks and ethnic Armenians have even taken place because of it. -0-
