ACTION COMMEMORATING VICTIMS OF ARMENIAN POGROMS IN SUMGAIT AZERI TOWN HELD IN YEREVAN

PanARMENIAN.Net - A meeting devoted to the 16-th anniversary of the mass pogroms and murders of Armenians in Sumgait Azeri town is held in Yerevan today. Participants of the action, initiated by the Union of Writers of Armenia, also organize a procession heading for the Embassies of Russia, France and the US, as well as the UN Yerevan Office to deliver a special address on the occasion of the events in Azerbaijan February 26-29, 1988. Armenian President Robert Kocharian has made an address over the anniversary of the tragic events in Sumgait, specifically noting that the atmosphere of impunity and the policy of encouraging crimes, pursued by the Azeri authorities, still come out in the form of murder of an Armenian officer in Budapest. "The task of the Armenian state and all Armenians is to rule out the opportunity of repetition of "Sumgaits" in any point of the world. We will do it in the form of a nation-wide organization, as well as via rallying and augmenting the forces," the Armenian leader said. It should be reminded that in the course of the Sumgait pogroms over 30 citizens of Armenian nationality were killed and hundreds were wounded. Over 14 thousand Sumgait Armenians had to flee from the town not to fall victims of Azeri barbarians.
