SWEDISH COMPANY FINANCING AZERBAIJANI ARMY?

To sustain the national army, mass requisitions from foreign companies are being organized in Baku.

Apparently, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense has serious financial difficulties. A country that boasts of having rich oil and gas resources does not have enough money to sustain its armed forces. To solve the problem, President Heydar Aliyev recently signed a decree on creation of a Fund to help the national army. The government considers it the only way to feed its soldiers. “We hope that this way we will be able to satisfy the needs of the army,” Head of the press service of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense Ramiz Melikov said.

The refusal to pay the money will mean to call into question the perspective of getting back the financial resources invested in the Azerbaijani economy. Knowing about such a danger, some foreign companies have already agreed to pay accurately the newly introduced tax for maintenance of the Azerbaijani army. If believe the Baku newspapers, the representation of the Ericsson Swedish company operating in Baku has expressed its readiness “to help the Azerbaijani army and to allocate sponsor money to it”. An interesting detail – the Swedish government spends lot of money on the implementation of programs on mine clearing in the zone of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, at the same time the company operating in Baku “donates” money that is being used for purchase of new mines. The official Stockholm, indeed, has lot of things to think about...
