Declaration urging punishment of those privy to Sumgait pogroms to be sent to UN

PanARMENIAN.Net - Participants of a mourning event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Sumgait pogroms signed a declaration urging the UN Security Council to institute international tribunal for prosecution of those responsible for the Armenian pogroms in Sumgait and Baku.

The declaration reads, in part, "Impunity of those who organized and committed atrocities in Sumgait and Baku and canonization of young Azeri serviceman who murdered a sleeping Armenian officer resulted in sinister Armenophobia and even open calls for war.

"The Azerbaijani President and Milli Mejlis members cynically remark that Armenia will soon be wiped out from the South Caucasus map. Instead of repentance for atrocities, we hear new threats, sabre-rattling and offences.

"Having expunged its state archives, Turkey invites historians to study the documents indicative of the Armenian Genocide. As to Sumgait and Baku, all evidence has been kept.

"We are deeply convinced that only after just trial over the inciters and perpetrators of the pogroms it will be possible to find a ground for talks.

"We, the participants the meeting, and victims of the tragedy, urge the UN Security Council to institute international tribunal for prosecution of those responsible for the atrocities committed in Sumagit in 1988 and in Baku in 1990," IA Regnum reports.
