Armenian President, Mayor of Yerevan discuss problems of the capital

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan is pleased with the activity of Yerevan city administration in 2008, Mayor of Yerevan Yervand Zakharyan told a news conference today.



"The Mayor's Office 2008 report and projects for 2009 were in focus at the meeting with the President," he said.



The president referred to a number of issues to be tackled by the city and regional administration.



According to Yervand Zakharyan, the programs budget set in 2008 totaled AMD 172,1 billion instead of AMD 154 billion planned. He also informed that all scheduled projects were completed on time.



He also touched upon major road construction projects: asphalt works, construction of bridges, underground passages, street lighting, irrigation network.



"Heating systems are already functioning in 156 schools out of 202 and 40 kindergartens out of 169. 115 buses, 18 trolleybuses were imported and subway works to the amount of AMD 1,770 billion conducted," he added.



The President gave strict instructions to remediate deficiencies in road construction and transportation.



Ecological problems were also addressed. If the results of 2008 registered 7,8 sq.m of greenbelt per capita, the improvement up to 8,3 sq.m of greenbelt per capita is planned in 2009. Garbage disposal is the next major issue with all Yerevan citizens.



"Negotiations are underway with Japanese and German organizations to plan construction of debris processing plants," Zakharyan said.



"The Armenian government authorized the project on construction of underground parking lots in Charles Aznavour, Shahumyan, Sakharov and France squares. Construction works have been initiated in Freedom square, as well as further build-ups of green belts and playgrounds. Construction works will continue in Armenia despite the world financial crisis," the Mayor of Yerevan said.
