Public Council votes to preserve Zvartnots airport old terminal

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian Public Council hosted a final sitting Monday, November 11 to discuss demolition of the old terminal of Zvartnots airport, with 2 voting in favor and 80 against the demolition.

As the Public Council spokesperson Ani Gasparyan told PanARMENIAN.Net in the days to come the Council will review and submit draft offers to the government.

The concessioner will be demanded to provide a document with detail calculations of further actions on the development of the building, study the possibilities of the old terminal’s operation as well as its inclusion in the list of cultural monuments.

The old terminal of Zvartnots airport is at present a dangerous construction, Armenia International Airports CJSC said in a statement in October, noting that no resources for preservation of the building will be provided, or any responsibility for emergency situations assumed.

"We are planning to upgrade Zvartnots international airport yet won't be spending time or resources to maintain the collapse-prone construction which doesn't meet modern air-navigation standards," the company statement said.

A 30-year concession agreement for the management of operations at the airport was signed with Armenia International Airports CJSC n 2001.

As the company statement said, "with the passengers’ security provision as a key goal and responsibility, the government approved the plan stipulating for construction of a new terminal to meet modern standards. Adjacent to an old terminal, a new building was constructed, the former left unused being below par."

Earlier, the representative of the General Department of Civil Aviation (GDCA) Ashot Azizyan pledged to support any decision taken by the Public Council.
