Armenian President: spreading misinformation is common for Baku

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan took part in the international Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul on March 27 during his working visit to South Korea. Speaking at the summit, Sargsyan thanked South Korean president Lee Myung-bak for organizing the event, as well as U.S.President Barack Obama for efforts pursued since Washington conference in 2010.

“Nuclear security was and still is a key issue for Armenia. We continue to undertake specific measures to boost security and control in the sphere of nuclear energy,” presidential press service quoted him as saying.

Sargsyan mentioned that Armenia organized staff training and strengthened its customs service in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, thus promoting the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540. “As producer of nuclear energy, Armenia deepens cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” Armenian President said thanking IAEA, Russian and EU experts for their assistance in this area.

Sargsyan also touched upon statements voiced by Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev over Armenian Nuclear Power Station. “Obvious misinformation spread by Azerbaijan does not surprise me; this is their usual method of working. They distort not only all information related to Armenia and Karabakh, but international documents as well forgetting that it was namely Azerbaijan that unlashed the war. It was Azerbaijan that refused to stop hostilities; they come up with militarist statements, they refuse to settle the issue basing on the international law,” he stated.

According to the Armenian leader, Chernobyl and Fukushima made people consider the future of nuclear energy; however, in some cases this is the only way to energy security available at the moment. In particular, this is the case in Armenia, which has been facing two decades of illegal blockade by Azerbaijan and Turkey.

President Sargsyan emphasized Armenia's commitment to tackling illegal use of radioactive substances, as well as combat against international terrorism.
