UK court to decide on WikiLeaks boss Assange extradition today

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Supreme Court of Britain is set to rule on Wednesday, May 30 on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s appeal against his extradition to Sweden over alleged sex crimes, RIA Novosti reported.

This could be the final rule in the Assange case as two lower courts earlier decided in favor of the internet whistleblower’s extradition.

The verdict is scheduled to be announced at 9:15 a.m. local time (8:15 GMT).

Assange, who gained global notoriety after WikiLeaks published thousands of classified U.S. documents beginning in 2010, was arrested in London in December that year at the request of Sweden. The Scandinavian country's authorities accuse him of sexually abusing two Swedish women while on a visit to Stockholm in August 2010.

The 40-year-old Australian was released on bail a few days after his arrest and has since remained under house arrest outside London. He has denied the charges.

Assange’s defense lawyers earlier argued that his extradition would breach his human rights as he could be eventually deported to the United States and face the death penalty on charges related to WikiLeaks.
