Yemeni gunmen “cut off soldier’s fingers”July 17, 2012 - 21:57 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Gunmen in south Yemen, where troops are hunting down militants linked to Al-Qaeda, abducted a soldier and cut off three of his fingers, the defence ministry's website said on Tuesday, July 17, according to AFP. The site, 26sep.net, named the soldier as Mohammed al-Jaradi, and said he was abducted late on Monday in Daleh, the capital of the province of the same name, and taken him to a village. Jaradi was later found in the village with three fingers on one hand missing. The ministry said the authorities were trying to prevent the militants from regrouping in Daleh, after they were ousted by the military from neighbouring Abyan province where they had controlled several areas for a year. It also said the police headquarters in Daleh was shelled on Tuesday by unidentified assailants. Courts there closed several days ago because of the number of armed attacks, it said. Taking advantage of a central government weakened by an Arab Spring-inspired uprising last year, Al-Qaeda-linked militants overran most of Abyan. But on May 12, the military launched an all-out offensive to recapture the province and have made significant advances. Top stories Authorities said a total of 192 Azerbaijani troops were killed and 511 were wounded during Azerbaijan’s offensive. In 2023, the Azerbaijani government will increase the country’s defense budget by more than 1.1 billion manats ($650 million). The bill, published on Monday, is designed to "eliminate the shortcomings of an unreasonably broad interpretation of the key concept of "compatriot". The earthquake caused a temporary blackout, damaged many buildings and closed a number of rural roads.
