Yerevan 24th in UN’s fastest shrinking cities list

PanARMENIAN.Net - UN Habitat has released the “State of the World's Cities” report assessing prosperity of the cities on various parameters such as productivity, quality of life and environment sustainability.

Among nearly 600 major cities listed in a UN report, 28 cities are on track to shrink between 1990 and 2025.

Russia dominates the list, along with many cities in former Soviet states. There are some surprises on there too, like Rome, Milan, and Turin in Italy.

Yerevan was placed 24th in the list. According to the report, in 1990, the Armenian capital’s population size totaled 1,175,000; in 2010 the figure dropped to 1,112,000 with population growth to 1,143,000 people predicted in 2025.

Tbilisi (Georgia) with a population of 1,224,000; 1,120,000 and 1,138,000 in 1990, 2010 and 2025 respectively was listed 15th.

Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk, Hungary’s Budapest and Ukraine’s Donetsk topped the list of fastest shrinking cities.
