Magnitude 6.6 aftershock rocks tsunami-hit Solomon Islands

PanARMENIAN.Net - Aftershocks are continuing to rock the tsunami-hit Solomon Islands, hampering relief efforts, BBC News said.

A 6.6 magnitude aftershock hit early on Friday, February 8 damaging roads in the town of Lata on Santa Cruz Island, in the far east of the Pacific nation.

An inbound plane with PM Gordon Darcy Lilo on board returned to Honiara because of concerns over runway damage, his spokesman said.

The plane was also carrying relief supplies for those left homeless.

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake on Wednesday triggered a tsunami that flattened several villages on the western coast of Santa Cruz Island.

Nine people were killed and at least 3,500 are thought to have been made homeless.

Assessing the level of damage is taking time because of the very remote location of the island and debris on its airstrip.
