Japan to pledge $10mln humanitarian aid for Syria

PanARMENIAN.Net - Japan will pledge around $10 million in humanitarian aid for people displaced by the civil war in Syria at the upcoming Group of Eight Summit, NHK World reported.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will announce the assistance at the G8 meeting that begins on Monday in Northern Ireland.

Leaders are expected to discuss Syria, the global economy, and Iran and North Korea's nuclear programs at the summit.

Abe will call for a united effort by the international community to put a stop to the serious humanitarian situation in Syria.

In addition to about $10 million in emergency aid for Syrian refugees, Abe will also promise about $100 million in aid to Jordan to help the country deal with the influx of Syrian refugees crossing the border.

Regarding North Korea, Abe will stress that the international community must send a strong message that it will not allow a nuclear-armed North Korea and will seek thorough implementation of UN resolutions.

The Prime Minister will also seek support for his administration's efforts to resolve the abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korea.
