Triple bombing kills 14, wounds 40 at Iraqi market

PanARMENIAN.Net - A triple bombing at an outdoor market in a village just north of Baghdad has reportedly killed 14 people and wounded 40.

According to the Associated Press, police officials said three bombs went off on Thursday, Sept 26, as the market in the Shiite village of Sabaa al-Bour was packed with shoppers. The village is about 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Baghdad.

The officials say two bombs exploded at the entrance of the village market while the third one went off inside.

The attack came shortly after a bombing at an outdoor market in southern Baghdad killed seven people, including two women. Medical officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the casualty figures.

Two bombs concealed in air conditioning units inside a Sunni mosque south of the Iraqi city of Samarra exploded during Friday prayers last week, killing at least 15 people. A further 17 people were wounded in the blasts, which took place in al-Mafraq, around 10 km south of Samarra.

Earlier, a bomb has struck a Sunni mosque during prayers north of Baghdad, killing 28 people. Police officials said the bombing hit the village of Umm al-Adham on the outskirts of Baqouba, 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad. The officials say at least 41 people are wounded. Health officials confirmed the death toll.

Iraq is weathering it deadliest bout of violence in half a decade, raising fears the country is returning to the widespread killing that pushed it to the brink of civil war following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International demanded all executions in Iraq be halted immediately, after 13 men were executed in Baghdad.

The organization has been able to confirm the names of nine of the men, who were executed on Sept 22 following death sentences imposed after unfair trials and based on “confessions” allegedly extracted under torture. Four others were also executed that day, bringing the total number of executions in Iraq so far this year to at least 73, AI said.
