Armenian, Azeri FMs talk Karabakh settlement in New York

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met with the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs in New York on the sidelines of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.

Later Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov jointed the talks with with Ambassadors James Warlick of the United States, Pierre Andrieu of France and Igor Popov of Russia, and the personal representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Ambassador Andrzej Kasprzyk

The Nagorno Karabakh settlement was at the focus of the meeting, with the Co-Chairs reiterating their adherence to peaceful resolution, Foreign Ministry press service reported.

French President Francois Hollande’s initiative to host talks between the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders in Paris was also discussed.

Later, the Co-Chairs announced plans to visit the South Caucasus in late October.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
