Russia Considers Involving UN GA in Conflict Settlement Counter-ProductiveSeptember 15, 2006 - 15:09 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Russia was initially agaisnt politicization of the issue and involvement of the General Assembly to that end. We are still convinced that the step in question in counter-productive. Russia perceives it aims at making existing formats of settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh, Georgian-Abkhaz, Georgian-Ossetian and Transniestrian conflicts vague, Russian MFA official representative Mikhail Kamynin said. In his words, purposeful, productive work within the existing negotiation mechanisms will promote settlement of the aforementioned conflicts more than involvement of the UN GA, reports Interfax. We note that on September 12, the first day of work of the UN GA 61st session, initiated by GUAM member states the GA General Committee considered the issue of inclusion of the aforementioned item in the agenda of its session. The Committee decided that recommending inclusion of the item in the agenda is inexpedient. Not agreeing with its decision, GUAM countries submitted the issue for consideration by the GA. By a vote of 16 for, 15 against and 65 obtained the UN GA resolved to include the item of «frozen» conflicts in the agenda of the 61st session.
