Russia mulls involvement in Armenian NPP’s new power unit construction

PanARMENIAN.Net - Russia is exploring possibilities of participating in the construction of the new power unit of the Armenian nuclear power plant (NPP), Russian Sputnik reports.

In March 2014, the government of Armenia decided to extend the service life of the second power unit due to the delays in the construction of a new unit. Along with Armenian experts, Russia’s nuclear energy corporation Rosatom decided to work on the project to extend the power unit's service life until 2026.

Russia and Armenia signed a corresponding deal in 2014.

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant was opened in 1980, but was closed due to the 1988 earthquake in Armenia and reopened in 1993.

The European Union has been calling on Armenia to suspend the NPP’s operations for several years.
