U.S. slams crackdown, arrests of activists in Azerbaijan![]() August 18, 2016 - 12:04 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The United States is troubled by the August 12 arrest of Azerbaijani opposition Republican Alternative (REAL) Movement Executive Secretary Natig Jafarli, the U.S. Department of State said in a press release. “We also are troubled by reports of additional arrests of activists,” it said. “We urge the Azerbaijani government to release these and other activists incarcerated in connection with exercising their fundamental freedoms, to respect the fundamental freedoms of its citizens, and to allow an open and public dialogue about the direction of the country, particularly in the run-up to the planned September 26 constitutional amendment referendum.” Also, the U.S. urged the Azerbaijani government to submit the constitutional amendments for a joint Venice Commission and ODIHR Opinion. ![]() ![]() Azerbaijani authorities report that they have already resettled 3,000 people in the Nagorno-Karabakh town of Stepanakert. On June 10, Azerbaijani President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev will leave for Turkey on a working visit. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev arrived in Moscow on April 22 to hold talks with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
