Russia taking every measure to assist jailed citizen in Azerbaijan

PanARMENIAN.Net - Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan is taking every possible step to assist Russian-Israeli blogger Alexander Lapshin, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Wednesday, February 15, TASS reports.

Despite the fact that Moscow’s position on the inadmissibility of extradition of Russian citizens to third countries has been repeatedly stated to Minsk, Lapshin was extradited to Azerbaijan on February 7.

Rrussian embassy representatives visited the blogger at the Baku detention facility, Zakharova said. No complaints about detention conditions have been reported, she added.

According to her, the Russian side "is in constant contact with law enforcement agencies, Prosecutor General's Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, as well as the Embassy of Israel in the country.

Lapshin, 40, divides his time between Israel and a few other places. He was arrested on December 15 in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, at the request of Azeri authorities who demanded his extradition.

Lapshin was arrested following his visits to Karabakh as well as due to critical posts in his Russian-language blog against Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Once extradited to Azerbaijan, Lapshin was immediately taken into custody.
