OSCE MG could prohibit arms sale to Karabakh zone: Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - The countries of the OSCE Minsk Group could impose an embargo and prohibit the sale of weapons to a number of countries, Armenia's deputy foreign minister Shavarsh Kocharyan told journalists on Wednesday, September 6, Aysor.am reports.

Kocharyan's comments came after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the supply of arms to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone does not benefit the peace process, but only exacerbates the situation .

"At one point, the Russian side said that if it does not supply weapons to the conflict zone, other countries will," Kocharyan said.

"I suggested then that taking into account the fact that the OSCE MG co-chairing countries are permanent members of the UN Security Council and have the appropriate potential, they can try to achieve the application of arms embargo on such countries. This would yield a solution of the question."

The meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers Edward Nalbandian and Elmar Mammadyarov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York has been coordinated with the mediators of the OSCE Minsk Group, Mammadyarov said on Wednesday.
