Panic after 5.8 quake in Turkey, Greece leaves 1 dead

PanARMENIAN.Net - A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck the southwestern coast of Turkey near Marmaris at 2:17 a.m. local time on Tuesday, causing widespread panic and resulting in one fatality and at least 69 injuries. The quake's epicenter was located approximately 10 kilometers offshore at a depth of 68 kilometers, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremors were felt across the region, including on the Greek island of Rhodes, situated about 29 kilometers south of the epicenter. Tourists and residents reported being awakened by the shaking, with many evacuating buildings in fear, The Independent reports.

In the Turkish town of Fethiye, a 14-year-old girl named Afranur Günlü died after suffering a panic attack triggered by the earthquake. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated, "In Fethiye, a 14-year-old girl named Afranur Günlü was taken to the hospital due to a panic attack but, unfortunately, despite all interventions, she passed away."

Most of the injuries occurred in Muğla province, where residents, in a state of panic, jumped from windows and balconies to escape their homes. Authorities reported that 46 individuals were hospitalized, while others received treatment on-site or were briefly treated and discharged.

Despite the intensity of the quake, there were no immediate reports of significant structural damage in Turkey or Greece. Disaster management teams have been dispatched to assess the situation and provide assistance where needed.
