Karintak marks 20th anniversary of legendary battle January 26, 2012 - 11:33 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Today, Jan 26, the Artsakh village Karintak marks the 20th anniversary of the heroic liberation battle, which kicked the start of consequent victories of the Armenian army in Karabakh war. Karintak is the largest rural settlement located 2 km far from Shushi, near the gorge on the left of Karkar river. On the night of Jan 25-26, 1992, Azeri detachments with 1500 thous. soldiers and officers, equipped with a large amount of armament and accompanied by muggers, launched an offensive on Karintak (un unprecedented military operation which was elaborated in details with participation of Azerbaijani then-Defense Minister Mamedov). Early in the morning, two riot battalions were close to surround the village. However, the operation failed despite all preparations. Although poorly armed, the population of the village, including women, stood up to defend their land and made the enemy retreat, leaving 200 dead after a 12-hour battle. The Encyclopedia of Karabakh Liberation war says the following about this heroic episode: “The self-defense of Karintak village was of great significance, when the small detachment of Armenian volunteers was able to resist the attack.”
