John Jamian re-takes post of Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority director

PanARMENIAN.Net - John Jamian is returning for his second stint as executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority.

Jamian, who served in that role from 1997 to 2001, has been hired by the port's five-member board of directors, the organization confirmed. He started June 1.

According to Crain’s Detroit Business, Jamian said he returned because he wanted to again work on economic development using the port as a tool.

"The Port of Detroit is our gateway to the world. We're open through the St. Lawrence Seaway to any port in the world," he said. "We have to be mindful that the port isn't about a couple of cruise ships here and there."

Jamian left the port job previously to become executive director of the Armenian Assembly of America, a post he held until President Bush appointed him deputy director of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration.

He was in that federal position, as deputy and then acting director, from 2003 until 2006. Since then he's been a partner at the West Bloomfield Township office of Jamian, McElroy & Hamlin LLC, a government affairs consulting firm.
