U.S. makes new proposals on missile defense shield

PanARMENIAN.Net - "We continue to consult with the Russian government regarding its concerns about the potential fielding of U.S. missile defense capabilities in Europe," said John C. Rood, Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe.



New proposals were presented during the meeting of the Russia-U.S. working group.



"We tried to use the proposals made by Russian President Putin for expanding cooperation in missile defense sector," Mr Rood said. However, he refrained from furnishing details.



The Bush administration intends to field 10 interceptors in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic by 2013. Presently, negotiations with the governments of the two countries are held.



In response, Russia offered to jointly use Gabala radar base in Azerbaijan.



The Russian delegation agreed to consider the package of proposals. The next meeting will be held in Moscow October 3, Echo of Moscow reports.
