Hrachia Petrosyan: It is impossible to define exact time and location of earthquake

PanARMENIAN.Net - Since yesterday Armenia's the seismic stations have registered 11 aftershocks, the last one was registered today at 8:44 a.m. with 0.8 magnitude which accounts for Richter magnitude 1 earthquake. This means that aftershocks are weakening since the seismic energy is gradually fading. Ther is no need for panic," deputy head of the Armenian National Service for Seismic Protection (NSSP) Hrachya Petrosyan told a news conference today.

"Yesterday people in the city were rumoring that a new earthquake was expected first in Yerevan, then in the neigbouhood of Abovian, or near Aramas village. Yerevan is not a seismic zone," he said. The NSSP informs that such information is groundless. The current seismic situation in the republic is under the NSSP control, there are no grounds for panic.

"Making predictions is very hard. Scholars of the world are working in that direction, and so do the Armenian scientists. There is no need to worry at this point. However, tt's impossible to predict the concrete time and place of earthquake," Hrachya Petrosyan said.

"It's very easy to scare a frightened person. We have witnessed the earthquake in Spitak. We have seen victims and all this remains in our memory," adviser to the head of the Rescue Service of Armenia Nikolay Grigoryan said.

On June 18, at 12:34 local time, the seismic network of the Armenian National Service for Seismic Protection registered a 3.25 magnitude earthquake, which accounts for Richter magnitude 5 earthquake. The epicenter was 10 km to the north of Garni village. The intensity of the earthquake reached 3-4 at the epicenter. The quake was felt in Yerevan and nearby settlements.
