Georgia’s Armenians urge authorities to recognize Genocide

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian organizations in Georgia addressed the Georgian president, the parliament speaker, chairman of Tbilisi’s city council, and will shortly call on all Georgian MPs urging them to “recognize the fact of the Armenian Genocide in 1915-1923 and condemn its perpetrators.

“In 1915-1923, the Ottoman Empire and later the Turkish government planned and implemented the scheme of annihilation and expatriation of the local Armenian population. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide,” the statement says.

“We address the government of our country which has repeatedly proved its commitment to justice and humanitarian values, despite opportunistic historic and political circumstances. We urge you to understand and respect the fair demand of Georgia’s Armenian citizens on recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide fact by our country,” Georgia’s Armenians noted in their call.

On April 24, Tbilisi will host several events dedicated to the 97th anniversary of the crime against humanity. These will include concerts, theatrical performance, exhibition, wreath-laying ceremony, liturgy, as well as a peaceful protest action at the Turkish embassy in Tbilisi.

According to Georgia Online, the events are organized by Hayartun Cultural Center at the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, Armenian Community in Georgia, the National Congress of Armenians in Georgia, Assembly of Tbilisi Armenians, and the Union of Georgia’s Armenians.
