Spain offers UEFA to stage Euro 2012

PanARMENIAN.Net - Last week's bombings in Ukraine have sparked security concerns ahead of the kick-off, while there are calls from a number of prominent European politicians to boycott the event, according to Goal.com.

Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Angel Maria Villar has reportedly made an offer to UEFA to step in and stage Euro 2012 because of the current political situation in Ukraine.

The tournament is scheduled to be co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland but last week's bombings in Dnipropetrovsk have sparked serious security concerns ahead of the big kick-off next month.

There is also international concern over Ukraine's alleged mistreatment of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who was jailed for seven years last October, and President of the EU Commission Jose Manuel Barroso has already stated that he will boycott the European Championship as a consequence, while a spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel has admitted that she is currently considering following suit.

UEFA has affirmed that if the political situation in Ukraine becomes more unstable, the only option the governing body would consider would be to postpone the event for a year.

HoweverRFEF chief Villar has informed Michel Platini, UEFA president, that Spain would be ready, willing and able to stage the tournament this summer.

The Iberian nation last hosted the European Championship in 1964 at a time when only four teams participated in the finals.
