Dozens of Rio policemen arrested over drug dealer’s bribes

PanARMENIAN.Net - The authorities in Brazil have arrested 60 policemen accused of receiving regular payments from drug dealers to turn a blind eye to their activities in several shanty towns of Rio de Janeiro, BBC News reported.

Eleven suspected drug dealers from Rio's main criminal gang - the Red Command - were also arrested. The policemen also sold weapons to the gangs, investigators said.

Rio de Janeiro has been trying to clean up its most dangerous regions ahead of the 2016 Olympics, which it will host, and the 2014 football World Cup.

More than 20 of Rio's most dangerous shantytowns, or favelas, have been occupied by police and army forces.
