Astana hosts CIS Council of Foreign Ministers

PanARMENIAN.Net - Urgent collaboration to eliminate the so-called foreign terrorist-militants is a priority, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said at a regular meeting of Foreign Ministers of member-states of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Astana hosted Thursday, October 15, the regular meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the CIS member states, with the participation of ministers and representatives of the foreign offices of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

During the meeting, issues of multilateral cooperation within the CIS, key challenges of the international agenda were discussed. Draft statements on UN’s 70th anniversary and the fight against international terrorism, as well the appeal by heads of CIS member countries in connection with the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster were agreed upon and submitted to the heads of states.

Nalbandian addressed the draft statement on the UN anniversary, stressing the leading role of the Organization in maintaining peace and stability. According to him, the adoption of the statement by the heads of CIS member states demonstrates the countries’ commitment to the objectives and principles of the UN Charter.

Traditionally, much attention was paid to the humanitarian component of multilateral cooperation. A number of important documents aimed at the development of relations in the field of culture and education were approved, as well as a draft plan of events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the CIS, scheduled for 2016 celebration.

The next meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council was arranged for April 8, 2016 in Moscow.
