Armenian army's victory changed opinion about Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - 15 years of the Armenian Army may be divided into 3 stages, RA Defense Minister Serge Sargsyan said at a solemn event dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Armenian Army formation. "The first stage is February 1989-1992 that included providing security of the Armenian and Nagorno Karabakhi people. That was the period of Armenian volunteers, who upheld the honor of an Armenian soldier centuries long. That was the period of spontaneous war and disorganization. Meanwhile, the situation demanded a different approach. The second stage is June 1992-May 1994. Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh were involved in a war with Azerbaijan. With ruined economy, in hunger, our state was building a national army. The newly formed unites were sent to the front. Today we can say proudly that in army formation we are a little ahead of Azerbaijan. And this 'a little' predetermined our victory which changed other nations' opinion about our army. The Armenian people known for their tragedies appeared struggling, firm and resolute in democracy building. During this very period a great number of untrained men were killed, many were wounded.

The third period started in 1994 and is in process till the present day. This is the period of formation of our army. Our main goal is to raise the efficiency of our army, ensure sustainable development of troops, strengthen discipline and army-society ties, improve living conditions of the military. Army appears as a modern military-defense system under formation," the Defense Minister said.

"Modern army demands professional and fundamental education. We needed personnel. Military schools were established one after another. Over 4400 officers were trained in these institutions. Over 1630 cadets are being trained in Russia and Greece at present," Serge Sargsyan underscored.
