Russia, Iran discuss Karabakh diplomatic settlement

PanARMENIAN.Net - Russia and Iran have stressed the importance of achieving a long-term political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh and weighed in on the role of the countries of the region in that process, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a press conference following talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday, April 13.

"We discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, taking into account the mediation efforts of Russia, which make it possible to maintain a stable ceasefire," Lavrov said, according to TASS.

"We stressed the importance of overcoming the consequences of the conflict and, in general, achieving its long-term political and diplomatic settlement on a fair basis in the interests of the Armenian and Azerbaijani peoples and weighed in on the role that the countries of the region can play in this process."

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side has returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
