PanARMENIAN.Net - The world is currently going through “a period of real danger”, while many of the achievements “are being eroded”, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday, August 5.

According to the WHO chief, the increase in Covid-19 infections, which could have already exceeded 200 million, not only represents a natural process, driven by the spread of the Delta strain of the coronavirus, but is also being fueled by “Greater social mix, inconsistent public health and social measures, and inequitable vaccination”.

“The achievements that we have achieved with so much effort they are losing, and health systems in many countries are overwhelmed, while the increasing number of infections is generating a shortage of life-saving treatments“, said Ghebreyesus, who warned that ”the world is now in a period of real danger“.

According to estimates, 80% of the 4,000 million of the vaccines administered were used by high- and upper-middle-income countries, while poor countries found themselves unable to vaccinate even their medical staff and people at risk.

At the same time, WHO faces a funding gap of $ 900 million, almost half of the sum needed to provide aid to countries in oxygen or basic medical equipment.
