IN BRUSSELS ARMENIA AND NATO DISCUSSED PROSPECTS OF COOPERATION

PanARMENIAN.Net - The meeting of the high-rank delegations of Armenia and the North-Atlantic Alliance within the framework of political consultations with NATO leadership was held in Brussels July 4. As reported by Armenian foreign ministry press service, the parties discussed Armenia's participation in "Partnership for Peace" NATO program and the prospects of further cooperation. It was noted in regard to the struggle against international terrorism that Armenia was one of the earliest to join the international antiterrorist coalition. In this regard the participants mentioned the importance of holding a seminar devoted to issues of struggle against international terrorism to be held in Yerevan in October 2002 under the aegis of the Council of the European-Atlantic Partnership. The representatives of the Armenian party emphasized that Armenia had repeatedly come out in favor of regional cooperation of the South Caucasian countries within the framework of "Partnership for Peace" NATO program. During the consultations the parties also discussed questions related to preparation of "Cooperative Best Effort" exercises to be held in 2003 in the territory of Armenia within the framework of "Partnership for Peace" program. Let us note that the Armenian delegation was headed by deputy foreign minister Tatul Margarian, and the NATO delegation was led by deputy secretary general of the North-Atlantic Alliance Gunter Altenberg and Edgar Bakley.
