Paris Mayor hosts joins Armenian Genocide commemoration

PanARMENIAN.Net - Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo hosted an event marking the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the French capital on Friday, April 22, Yerevan's Embassy in Paris reports.

Hidalgo, Ambassador of Armenia to France Hasmik Tolmajian, as well as the Co-Chairs of the Coordinating Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF) delivered speeches at the beginning of the reception.

In her speech, Tolmajian weighed in on the need to condemn the denial of the Armenian Genocide, emphasizing its importance for Armenians worldwide, as well as for the prevention of genocides and the international fight against crimes against humanity.

The ambassador also reminded of the important role that France played in sheltering Armenian refugees who survived the Genocide. According to her, descendants of those refugees went on to become responsible citizens of France, making a great contribution to French-Armenian relations.

The Department of Hauts-de-Seine, Alfortville, Antony and other communes and towns in France organized commemorative events dedicated the anniversary of the Genocide.

On April 24, 1915, a large group of Armenian intellectuals was rounded up and assassinated in Constantinople by the Ottoman government. On April 24, 2022, Armenians worldwide will be commemorating the 107th anniversary of the Genocide which continued until 1923. Some three dozen countries, hundreds of local government bodies and international organizations have so far recognized the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as Genocide. Turkey denies to this day.
