EU monitoring capacity in Armenia becomes operational

PanARMENIAN.Net - On 20 October, the EU Monitoring Capacity in Armenia became operational following the decision by the European Union to deploy monitoring experts along the Armenian side of the international border with Azerbaijan, EU NEIGHBOURS east reports.

The mission in Armenia, consisting of 40 EU civilian monitoring experts, will report on military posture and ceasefire related developments in the border regions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This will allow the EU to better support the work of the two parties’ border commissions.

The EU monitors will also provide observations of events taking place along the border, including human rights related developments. They will not have an investigative role.

The European Council on October 17 decided to deploy experts along the Armenian side of the international border with Azerbaijan with the objective of monitoring, analysing and reporting on the situation in the region. This decision follows the quadrilateral meeting between President Aliyev, Prime Minister Pashinyan, President Macron and President Michel on 6 October, and is aimed at facilitating the restoration of peace and security in the area, the building of confidence and the delimitation of the international border between the two states.
