Armenia welcomes G7 statement on Karabakh

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia has welcomes a statement adopted at the G7 Japan 2023 Foreign Ministers' meeting, urging Azerbaijan to fully comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law.

“Welcoming G7 statement, we underline that strong int'l steps & clear public commitments by all involved parties are paramount for normalization [between Armenia and Azerbaijan] in line with Granada statement, &t o address needs of #Armenians forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh,” Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said on Wednesday, November 8.

“Armenia has such a commitment.”

The G7 statement said, in particular: “…We are gravely concerned over the humanitarian consequences of the displacement of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh after the military operation conducted by Azerbaijan. We urge Azerbaijan to fully comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law and welcome international efforts to address urgent humanitarian needs for those who have been displaced. We underline our support for advancing a sustainable and lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan based on the principles of non-use of force, respect for sovereignty, the inviolability of borders, and territorial integrity.”

On September 19, Azerbaijan launched a military offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh, which left hundreds of Armenians killed and thousands of others displaced. On September 20, the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh agreed to a ceasefire on Azerbaijan’s terms, including the dissolution of the Defense Army. On September 18, President of the Republic of Artsakh Samvel Shahramanyan signed a decree, according to which the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) will cease to exist by January 1, 2024. Over 100,000 displaced residents have already fled Nagorno-Karabakh and reached Armenia.
